Aerial arts is a broad category that includes any dance or performance discipline performed off the ground using suspended apparatus. The most common forms taught at studio level are aerial silks (fabric), lyra/aerial hoop, static and flying trapeze, aerial hammock, and aerial pole. Many studios offer several of these, letting students explore different apparatus before committing to one.

What all aerial disciplines share is a demanding combination of strength, body awareness, and trust — trust in the equipment, trust in the instructor spotting you, and trust in the training process. Progress is gradual and physical. Students who come in expecting to be in the air immediately often find the first few classes are mostly conditioning and learning to climb safely. That foundation matters: aerial work done without proper preparation leads to real injuries.

The payoff is significant. Aerial arts develop upper body and core strength in ways few other disciplines match, and the skill progression — from basic climbs and poses to combination sequences and performance work — is deeply satisfying to move through.

What to Look for in an Aerial Studio

Equipment condition is the first thing to check. Rigging points, carabiners, swivels, and hardware should be rated appropriately for dynamic loads (not just static weight) and inspected on a documented schedule. Don’t be afraid to ask about the rigging certification of the facility — reputable studios can answer this question easily.

Instructor credentials matter. Look for instructors who have trained under established aerial programs, not just self-taught studio owners. Ask how long they’ve been teaching and what their own training background is.

Class size should be small — aerial work requires active spotting and direct attention during skill attempts. More than four to six students per instructor in a beginner apparatus class is too many.

Many aerial studios also offer pole, acrobatics, or other circus arts, which is convenient if you want to explore multiple disciplines or eventually cross-train. Aerial and pole share significant strength foundations, and studios that do both well often have a strong overall training culture.
